Retaining Wall Repair - Belmont, Massachusetts

Retaining Wall Tieback

Problem:
This 40-foot wide concrete retaining wall was tipping over into the adjacent property.  The wall was built approximately eighty years ago and it retained about six feet of soil.  Removal of the wall was extremely difficult in that access to the working area was very limited.  Structural stabilization of the wall was the desired result.

Engineering Design:
Northeast Helical and Phelan Engineering designed an earth support plan consisting of six helical tiebacks with galvanized wall anchors. Portable equipment was utilized to install the piles.  Furthermore, carbon fiber sheets were used to structurally reinforce the wall face.  Gravel was placed behind the wall to relieve both soil and water pressures.

Project Details:
The helical tiebacks advanced to about eight feet behind the wall, anchoring into the stable soils.  Northeast Helical removed and replaced a fence at the upper side of the wall.  The retaining wall was structurally repaired in approximately five working days.
